Business Continuity Planning - the final piece of the puzzle

Although the snow has gone for now, the lessons learned need to be incorporated into existing planning. Key things to consider include:

- how were key staff affected by different issues (e.g. closure of schools, ice and snow on side roads, failure of public transport)?

- how do you deal with staff who couldn't make it in? Are policies or actions transferable in case of a major flu outbreak?

- how was demand for your services affected? In the event of a national incident, should you be looking to scale back what you do? Does your planning just concentrate on what you do?

- how was your supply chain affected, and how can you mitigate any future effects?

- how did you communicate with staff, suppliers and clients? What can be done to improve communication?

Biscon Planning - dealing with snow

In the UK, we are not used to dealing with extreme winter weather. Biscon have put together a few tips to try and help.

Driving

  1. It takes very little snow to make a road treacherous.
  2. Leave increased gaps - stopping can take up to 10 times longer on a snowy road.
  3. ABS, traction control and 4WD do not make you immune to the snow.
  4. Get acceleration and braking done in a straight line. Go very slowly around the first few corners until you have a feel for how the car handles.
  5. To get traction, use as high a gear as you can and keep the revs as low as you can without stalling. You get more torque (and hence drive) in reverse than in forward gears.
  6. If you have to leave your car, leave a contact number and estimated return time in it, and try not to block roads and driveways.

General

  1. Be neighbourly. Use the weather as an opportunity to meet your neighbours - this includes other companies in a shared building.
  2. Dress appropriately. If you have gone to work in the car, take a different (sensible) pair of shoes and a warm outfit. Why not throw a sleeping bag in for good measure?
  3. Keep some provisions in the car - snacks and water.
  4. Perhaps most important of all - don't eat yellow snow!
